The Northeast Rugby Union Board of Directors have approved the following format for the 2010 NRU Men's Club playoffs.

NRU Men’s D1 Playoffs

All MetNY and NERFU regular season league games shall be played before the first weekend of the month of November (this year, played on or before 11/6/10)

MetNY #1 (home) plays NERFU #4 and NERFU #1 (home) plays MetNY #4 for the cross over/playoff match on 11/13/10. Additionally, MetNY #2 (home) plays NERFU #3 and MetNY #3 plays NERFU #2 (home) for the cross over/playoff match on 11/13/10.

Losers of crossovers are done

The winning LAU teams from the 11/13/10 cross over/playoff matches proceed to play the following weekend for the NRU championship (this year, 11/20-21/10 at Randall’s Island, NY)

On Saturday, the NRU #1 seed plays NRU #3/4 seed from the opposite LAU and #2 seed plays #3/4 seed from the opposite LAU. (If there are 3 teams from any given LAU, #1 of that union plays #3 of that union, with the other union playing #2 of the dominating Union).

NRU tournament seeds are first base upon LAU finish. If both LAU #1’s earn a seat to the NRU tournament, the #1 seed goes to which team made it further to the USA Championship (This year would be NERFU, Mystic River). If both LAU’s made it to the same level of match in the USA Championship, then the team with a better point differential in the final match will be the #1 NRU seed.

Winners on Saturday play the next day on Sunday for the NRU #1 & NRU #2 seed to Nationals at a time determined by the availability of the fields and schedule announced prior.

Losers on Saturday will play the next day on Sunday for the NRU #3 & NRU #4 seed at a time determined by the availability of the fields and schedule announced prior.

Both Saturday winners will host MARFU (#3 and #4) by seed in the Spring (probably 4/30/11)

Both Saturday losers will play at MARFU (#1 and #2) by seed in the Spring (probably 4/30/11)

The winners of the 4/30/2011 playoff matches will advance to the USARFU Sweet 16 National Championships (location to be determined by USARFU).

NRU Men’s D2 Playoffs

All MetNY and NERFU league games shall be played on or before the first weekend of the month of November (this year, played 11/6/10)

Crossover Matches on the second Saturday in November (this year, 11/13/10)

MetNY #1 (home) plays NERFU #4 and NERFU #1 (home) play MetNY #4 for the cross over/playoff match on 11/13/10.

(If there are 3 teams from any given LAU, #1 of that union plays #3 of that union, with the other union playing #2 of the dominating Union.)

NRU tournament seeds are first base upon LAU finish. If both LAU #1’s earn a seat to the NRU tournament, the #1 seed goes to which team made it further to the USA Championship (This year would be NERFU, Middlesex). If both LAU’s made it to the same level of match in the USA Championship, then the team with a better point differential in the final match will be the #1 NRU seed.

Winners on Saturday play the next day on Sunday for the NRU #1 & NRU #2 seed at a time determined by the availability of the fields and schedule announced prior.

Losers on Saturday will be scheduled and have the opportunity to play the next day on Sunday for the NRU consolation but ultimately are done advancing to USARFU Playoffs in the Spring.

Saturday winners only travel to USARFU Playoffs in the Spring

NRU Men’s D3 Playoffs

Each of the 3 LAU's (Met NY, New England and New York) get 2 teams in the NRU Men's Club D3 playoffs for a total of 6, seeded within their LAU based on the LAU finish. Teams are seeded based on the order of finish from the previous year’s NRU finish.

Top two seeds get a bye in the preliminary round. In the preliminary round, played on the second Saturday in November, (this year, 11/13/10), the #3 plays against the #5 or #6 and the #4 plays against the remaining team.

Teams from the same LAU cannot play each other in the preliminary round and exact pairings will be based on travel considerations as determined by the NRU Men’s Director. In general, the higher seed shall have home field advantage in the preliminary round except that the top seed from each LAU is guaranteed either a bye or a home match in the first round of the playoffs (i.e., if 2 teams from the same LAU are seeded #5 and #6 then the #5 seed gets a home match).

The winners of the 2 preliminary matches will advance to the final 4 weekend along with the #1 and #2 seeds on the third weekend in November. (this year, 11/20-21/10 at Randall’s Island, NY) The pairings for the Saturday semifinals will be such that teams from the same LAU do not play each other and that the #1 seed will play against the lowest-seeded of the participating teams that is possible without forcing teams from the same LAU to play each other. The #2 seed will play against the remaining opponent. On Sunday, the winners of these matches will advance to the championship final and the losers will have be scheduled and have the opportunity to play for consolation. Teams from the same LAU may play each other in finals.

The top two teams continue to the next spring’s USARFU competition in the order they finished.

Additionally, the NRU Board approved the following motions:

Dates for the Fall 2010 Men’s Senior NRU Playoffs will be at Randalls Island, NY on 11/20 & 11/21/10.

Crossover/preliminary matches are to be played on 11/13/2010.

In all matches under the supervision of the NRU, metal studded cleats shall not be worn on artificial turf, provided three full days notice of the type of pitch surface has been provided by the host team/organization to visiting sides that have never played on the scheduled pitch with an artificial surface, unless permission to wear metal studded cleats during the match has been provided in writing by the host team/organization.

In the Tier 1 title game, NRU defeated the Midwest Thunderbirds 25-12. NRU scored within moments of the starting whistle in an attempt to put the Thunderbirds away early. A quick try in reply from the outstanding Thunderbird wing, Tyra McGrady, was not enough to stop the clinical NRU side, whose dangerous backline tormented the Midwest all day.

NRU scrumhalf, Alyssa Baccarella, contributed heavily to her side’s victory and her precise passing game allowed the Northeast to attack the Thunderbird defense effectively and often. For Baccarella’s efforts, she earned the title of the tournament’s Most Valuable Player by National Team selectors.

The Tier 2 final between the Pacific Coast Grizzlies and the USA Under-20s was so closely fought that two overtime periods were necessary to determine a winner. The Grizzlies gave the Eagles a physical game, but the national side squeaked out a win in the closing seconds of overtime as Eagle captain Katie Johnson crossed the line for a try. The game was a promotion match, so the Under-20s will move up to Tier 1 for next year’s competition.

In the Tier 1 consolation match, the West defeated the Mid-Atlantic (MARFU) women 37-18. The West will remain in Tier 1 next year, but MARFU will drop to Tier 2.

The SoCal Griffins took on the South in the Tier 2 consolation match, shutting out the Southern women 16-0.

Sunday’s Results

Tier 1 Finals – Northeast 25, Midwest 12

Tier 1 Consolations – MARFU 18, West 37

Tier 2 Finals – Pacific Coast 18, USA U20s – 22

For those that attended the first annual Championship last year, it was well hosted by the San Francisco Fog, but due to other commitments they cannot host the event this year. The event will only be “unofficial” for one more year because USA Rugby is planning to pick up the Women’s 7s Nationals as an official event in 2011.

Details are being negotiated, USA Rugby may be able to help the host team this year with Gatorade, Game Balls, Training Supplies.

The date for the Championship can be either Aug 7-8 or Aug 14-15 depending on the host location’s preference. (If the event had been San Fran we were trying to mimic the men’s event, which is why we suggested Aug 14-15, but Aug 7-8 might work better for a lot of women’s teams because it won’t interfere with the Fall 15s Season).

If your club is interested in hosting the event, please contact Stacy Bennett at 571-235-3442 or stacy.c.bennett@saic.com by Friday June, 4. The organizing committee would like to announce the Date and Location by Monday, June 7.

This is the first in a series of surveys (link at end of message) designed to capture critical information from all college rugby teams across the country. The primary topics in this survey deal with the administrative/reporting structures of collegiate rugby clubs, rugby club budget items, and the availability of liability and medical insurance for college rugby clubs. Future surveys will investigate player and coach recruitment and development, competitive structures, etc.

Please be assured that the financial information provided will be kept confidential; reporting will consist of the means, medians, and ranges for each category without reference to any specific schools.

Please feel free to distribute the survey to as many college rugby teams as possible, it is ok if we get back multiple responses from each team although obviously we need to get back at least one per team and a complete data set across the country would be optimal. The availability of this dataset will assist the USCRA with its goal to engage college rugby administrators and promote the acceptance and standing of rugby on college campuses.

Contact me if you have any questions or concerns,

Sincerely,
